When Wills and Kate get married on April 29th, they will follow a little-known tradition for Royal Couples marrying in Westminster Abbey.
At the Queen's wedding to Prince Phillip in 1947, her bouquet of white orchids was returned to the Abbey the next day and laid on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a tradition started by the Queen Mother. The same will now happen with Kate's flowers.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier refers to a grave in which the unidentifiable remains of a soldier are interred. Such tombs can be found in many nations and are usually high-profile national monuments. Throughout history, many soldiers have died in wars without their remains being identified. Following WW1 a movement arose to commemorate these soldiers with a single tomb, containing the body of one such unidentified soldier. The Tomb in Westminster Abbey was unveiled on Armistice Day, 1920.
